Barangay Kauswagan – Cagayan De Oro City

Barangay Kauswagan is a highly progressive barangay in Cagayan de Oro City. It is located approximately three kilometers from the city’s poblacion (downtown area). Kauswagan is bordered by the Cagayan de Oro River to the east, Barangay Bulua to the west, Barangay Bonbon to the north, and Barangay Carmen to the south.

Historical Background

Originally known as “Balahotao,” the area was once believed to be inhabited by supernatural beings such as witches (balbal) and giants (kapre) due to its dense forest cover. Over time, the name was changed to “Kauswagan” in 1912, which translates to “progress” in the Bisayan language.

The early settlers of Kauswagan included families such as Abonitalla, Agawin, Salcedo, Pacana, Nagac, Amil, Beja, Sambaan, Rallo, and Avanceña. Many of these families intermarried and played significant roles in the development of the community. Additional settlers arrived from Bohol, Cebu, Ilocos, and Camiguin Island, especially after the eruption of Mount Hibok-Hibok in the 1870s. Agriculture, particularly rice and corn farming, was the primary livelihood of the early residents.

Religious and Educational Development

The residents were predominantly Catholic, and the first church was built on the lot of Gil Blas Pacana, who also served as the church fiscal of St. Augustine Cathedral. Over time, a division occurred with the introduction of the Aglipayan religion, leading to some families separating from the Catholic Church. However, the image of San Isidro Labrador, the community’s patron saint, remains preserved in the local chapel.

In 1907, the first school in Kauswagan was established in the church. Due to the lack of a permanent site, the school was moved multiple times before a group called “El Catorce” contributed funds to purchase land for a permanent school site. This land later became Kauswagan Elementary School, a lasting legacy of their civic-minded efforts.
