San Beda started as El Colegio de San Beda in Arlegui, Manila, offering basic and high school education along with the first two years of a college degree. It became San Beda College in 1918 and later earned university status in 2018 under Fr. Aloysius Maranan, OSB. The Benedictine monks arrived in the Philippines in 1895, first working in Surigao. Wanting to maintain Catholic values in education during the American colonial period, they established San Beda as a Catholic school.
