Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA)
The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) is the government agency tasked with developing and promoting the coconut and palm oil industry in the Philippines. Established in 1973, the PCA operates under the Department of Agriculture and serves as the primary body responsible for ensuring the sustainability and growth of the country’s coconut sector.
Mandate and Role
The PCA’s mission is to increase productivity, uplift the livelihood of coconut farmers, and strengthen the country’s position as a global leader in coconut-based products. Its work includes research and development, farm support services, processing and marketing initiatives, and farmer empowerment programs.
Programs and Services
- Coconut Planting and Replanting: Promotes high-yielding and disease-resistant coconut varieties to replace senile trees and improve farm productivity.
- Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP): A roadmap that provides long-term strategies for the coconut sector, including infrastructure, training, and credit support for farmers.
- Scholarship and Training Programs: Provides educational opportunities for children of coconut farmers and skills training to improve farm management and income diversification.
- Research and Development: Focuses on improving coconut varieties, combating diseases, and innovating processing technologies.
- Market Development: Assists farmers and cooperatives in promoting coconut-based products such as virgin coconut oil, coco sugar, coco coir, and other value-added goods.
