NIB (Nomor Induk Berusaha) in English

If you are starting or managing a business in Indonesia, legal legitimacy is the foundation for growth and security. The Indonesian government has streamlined this process through the introduction of the Nomor Induk Berusaha (NIB).

As part of the Online Single Submission (OSS) system, the NIB serves as a singular, powerful identity for entrepreneurs, replacing several legacy permits and simplifying the path to full legal compliance.

What is NIB (Nomor Induk Berusaha)?

NIB stands for Nomor Induk Berusaha, which translates to Business Identification Number. It is a 13-digit unique number issued by the Ministry of Investment/BKPM through the OSS system.

Think of the NIB as the “National Identity Card” (KTP) for your company. Once issued, it remains valid for as long as the business is operational and serves as the primary gateway for all further licensing needs.

Multi-Functionality of NIB

One of the greatest advantages of the NIB is its “all-in-one” nature. By obtaining an NIB, a business owner automatically fulfills the requirements for several other regulatory documents that used to be separate and time-consuming:

  • TDP (Tanda Daftar Perusahaan): The NIB officially serves as your Company Registration Certificate.
  • API (Angka Pengenal Importir): If your business involves importing goods, the NIB acts as your Importer Identification Number.
  • Customs Access: It provides the necessary rights for customs clearance for export and import activities.
  • BPJS Integration: The registration process helps facilitate the initial steps for social security (Health and Employment) for your workers.

Why Your Business Needs an NIB

Securing an NIB is not just a formality; it offers tangible benefits that can determine the success of your enterprise:

  1. Legal Protection: It ensures your business is recognized by the state, protecting you from legal disputes or administrative closures.
  2. Simplified Licensing: Under the Risk-Based Approach (OSS-RBA), businesses with a “Low Risk” profile can often start operations immediately after receiving their NIB.
  3. Access to Financing: Banks and financial institutions require an NIB as a mandatory document for business loan applications, including the People’s Business Credit (KUR) for small businesses.
  4. Government Programs: Many government-led training programs, subsidies, and tender opportunities are only available to businesses with a valid NIB.
  5. Enhanced Trust: Having a formal NIB increases your credibility with partners, suppliers, and customers, proving that your business is transparent and legitimate.

Who is Required to Have an NIB?

The requirement applies to almost every business actor in Indonesia, including:

  • Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM): Including individual online sellers and home-based businesses.
  • Large Enterprises: Including Limited Liability Companies (PT), Foundations, and Cooperatives.
  • Foreign Investors (PMA): Any foreign entity operating within Indonesia must obtain an NIB through the OSS system.

How to Get Your NIB: A Simple Guide

The registration process is entirely digital and free of charge. Here are the general steps to apply:

  1. Prepare Your Data: You will need your National Identity Number (NIK) for individuals, or the Deed of Establishment and NPWP (Tax ID) for legal entities.
  2. Access the OSS Portal: Visit oss.go.id and create a user account.
  3. Complete the Business Profile: Input details regarding your business location, capital investment, and the number of employees.
  4. Select KBLI Codes: Choose the correct Klasifikasi Baku Lapangan Usaha Indonesia (KBLI) code that matches your business activity.
  5. Submit and Issue: Once the data is verified, the system will generate your NIB certificate, which you can download and print immediately.
