Tagbilaran City is the vibrant capital of Bohol and the primary gateway to the province. Known as the “City of Friendship”, it offers a mix of rich history, cultural heritage, and modern economic growth.

History of Tagbilaran City

Long before Spanish colonization, the settlement served as a busy trading hub for merchants from China and Malaysia. Its most defining historical moment occurred in 1565. In the district of Bo-ol, Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi and local chieftain Datu Sikatuna forged a historic blood compact, known as the Sandugo. This event symbolized peace and friendship between the two leaders.

The settlement was officially established as a town in 1742 after separating from Baclayon. It eventually became a chartered metropolis on July 1, 1966.

The capital serves as the political, social, and economic center of Bohol. It has experienced significant economic growth fueled by investments and a booming service sector. Major industries include wholesale and retail trade, a growing food and beverage scene, and an emerging BPO industry. • Plaza Rizal: A peaceful central park located between the National Museum and the Cathedral.
• Carlos P. Garcia House: The preserved ancestral home of the former Philippine President, now a museum containing vintage memorabilia.
• Banat-i Hill: A popular spot for light hiking that offers panoramic views of the entire area and the Bohol Sea.
