History of Subic

Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo originally founded the surrounding province in 1572. The Spanish crown later declared the bay area a naval port in 1884. Builders constructed a massive arsenal and active ship repair yard.

American forces took control of the bay following the Spanish-American War in 1898. The United States Navy transformed the area into a major military base. The base famously hosted the 7th Fleet until the Americans departed in 1991. Today, the Subic Bay Freeport Zone drives major economic development and international investment.
