Daewoo Corporation – Tagum City

Daewoo Corporation was a major South Korean conglomerate that operated in various industries. It was founded in 1967 and grew to become one of South Korea’s largest chaebols (conglomerates) with interests in automotive, electronics, shipbuilding, construction, trading, and more.

Here are some key points about Daewoo Corporation:

  1. Automotive: Daewoo Motors was known for manufacturing automobiles. They produced a range of vehicles, including sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, and commercial vehicles. Its cars were exported worldwide and gained popularity in certain markets.
  2. Electronics: It had a significant presence in the electronics industry. They manufactured consumer electronics, including televisions, audio equipment, refrigerators, air conditioners, and other home appliances. The electronics products were marketed globally and enjoyed a strong reputation for their quality and affordability.
  3. Shipbuilding: Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) was a prominent division. DSME was renowned for its shipbuilding capabilities and constructed a wide range of vessels, including oil tankers, container ships, liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, and offshore platforms. DSME remains a leading shipbuilding company even after the restructuring.
  4. Construction: Daewoo Corporation’s construction division undertook large-scale infrastructure projects globally. They were involved in constructing highways, bridges, railways, power plants, industrial facilities, and more. Its construction projects were renowned for their scale and engineering expertise.
  5. Financial Troubles and Restructuring: Like many other Korean chaebols, it faced financial difficulties in the late 1990s. Accumulated debts and mismanagement led to the collapse of the conglomerate. The government orchestrated a restructuring process, resulting in the breakup of the corporation and the sale of its divisions and assets.

After the restructuring, various divisions were acquired by other companies or rebranded under different names. For example, Daewoo Motors was taken over by General Motors (GM) and became GM Daewoo, which later transformed into GM Korea. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) continues to operate as an independent company.
