Dumaguete City, Eastern Negros – City of Gentle People

Many Filipinos affectionately refer to Dumaguete City as “City of Gentle People”. This city serves as the capital of the Eastern Negros province in the Philippines. Visitors know it well for its relaxed atmosphere, rich history, and vibrant educational community. Dumaguete stands out as a unique and welcoming destination in the Visayas region.

History of Dumaguete

People generally trace the name “Dumaguete” back to the Cebuano words “dagit” (to snatch) or “dumaguet” (to swoop). Historically, Moro pirate raids frequently targeted this coastal settlement. Despite these challenging early days, Dumaguete officially became a parish and town in 1620.

Dumaguete grew in significance during the Spanish colonial era. It became the capital of the newly formed province on the eastern side of the island in 1890. American forces occupied the area in 1901. This transitional period brought about the historic establishment of Silliman Institute. Later, the city endured Japanese occupation during World War II. Filipino and American forces finally liberated the area in 1945. Dumaguete formally gained its chartered city status on July 15, 1948.

Local Government and Barangays

Mayor Hon. Manuel T. Sagarbarria currently leads the local government of Dumaguete City. Hon. Estanislao V. Alviola serves alongside him as the Vice-Mayor.

Administratively, 30 distinct barangays make up the city. Eight specific Poblacion barangays form the downtown core. This core includes areas like Tinago, Upper Luke Wright, and Rizal Boulevard. Other well-known barangays stretch out from the city center. These include Bagacay, Banilad, Daro, Piapi, and Taclobo.

Dumaguete perfectly blends historical architecture with accessible natural wonders. This blend makes it a favorite for both domestic and international travelers.

  • Rizal Boulevard: This lively, tree-lined promenade by the sea is perhaps the most iconic spot in the city. Families love walking, jogging, and enjoying local street food here at dusk.
  • Silliman University: Founders established this institution in 1901 as the first American and Protestant university in Asia. Its sprawling campus features striking architecture like Silliman Hall. It also houses museums and modern research facilities.
  • Dumaguete Cathedral & Belfry: The St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral is the oldest stone church on the island. Builders constructed it back in the 1600s. The historic Belfry stands right next door. Locals built this tower in the 1700s to alert citizens of approaching pirates.
  • Quezon Park: You can find this peaceful urban park situated right across the street from the Cathedral. It gives residents a shady place to relax in the city center.
  • Casaroro Falls: This incredibly tall, narrow waterfall flows in the neighboring municipality of Valencia. Lush, picturesque foliage tucks this natural wonder away.
  • Apo Island: You can reach this world-renowned dive site via a short boat ride from nearby Dauin. Divers love this area for its vibrant coral reefs and resident sea turtles.

Visitors come here for world-class educational institutions and rich historical insights. Many also use the city as a jump-off point for surrounding natural attractions. Dumaguete City truly lives up to its reputation as a city of gentle and welcoming people.
