Mabalacat City, Pampanga – History and Tourism

Mabalacat City sits proudly in the northern part of Pampanga province in the Philippines. It boasts a rich history, a dynamic local economy, and numerous tourist attractions. The municipality transitioned into a component city on July 21, 2012. Today, it serves as a major gateway and economic hub in Central Luzon.

History of Mabalacat

Historians trace the name “Mabalacat” to the indigenous balacat tree. In the local dialect, it simply translates to “full of balacat.” Indigenous Aeta communities originally settled this land. Authorities eventually established the area as an independent town in 1792.

The city’s development accelerated significantly in 1903. The American military established Fort Stotsenburg that year. This military installation eventually expanded into the massive Clark Air Base. The base played a crucial role in shaping the modern infrastructure and culture seen today.
