Municipality of Don Marcelino – Davao Oriental
For a long time, the southern tip of Mindanao remained a mystery to many travelers. But with the opening of world-class coastal roads and a growing reputation for raw, untouched beauty, the Municipality of Don Marcelino is quickly becoming the ultimate road trip destination in Davao Occidental.
Whether you are a motorcycle enthusiast, a beach lover, or a traveler looking for the “next big thing,” Don Marcelino offers a refreshing escape from the urban sprawl of Davao City.
Journey: A Destination in Itself
One of the biggest draws of Don Marcelino is the Coastal Road Bypass. Connecting Davao Occidental to Glan, Sarangani, this highway is often cited as one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the Philippines.
Imagine cruising along a winding asphalt ribbon with towering emerald cliffs on one side and the vast, sparkling blue of the Celebes Sea on the other. It is a favorite spot for “Photo of the Day” captures, offering panoramic views that rival the famous coastal drives of Batanes or Ilocos.
Why Visit Don Marcelino?
“Adventure Don Mar” Vibe
The local tourism slogan, “Adventure Don Mar, it’s NOT that FAR”, perfectly encapsulates the town’s spirit. While it feels like a secluded paradise, it is highly accessible for a weekend trip. The town serves as a bridge between the rugged mountains of the province and the serene coastal lifestyle.
Untouched Beaches and Coves
Unlike the commercialized resorts of Samal, the beaches in Don Marcelino such as those highlighted on Sandee offer a more “off-the-grid” experience. You’ll find gray to golden sand shores, crystal-clear waters, and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for soul-searching or a quiet family picnic.
Glimpse of Local Culture and History
Named after Marcelino Maruya, the town’s first municipal mayor, Don Marcelino is a young municipality (established in 1979) with a rich heart. It is composed of 15 barangays, each offering a unique glimpse into the life of the fishing and farming communities of Davao Occidental.
Travel Tips: How to Get There
- By Private Vehicle/Motorcycle: This is the best way to enjoy the scenic bypass road. From Davao City, head south towards Digos City and continue toward Malita. Don Marcelino is the next major town after Malita.
- By Public Transport: Take a bus or van from the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal (DCOTT) bound for Malita. From Malita, there are local PUVs and habal-habal that can take you further into Don Marcelino.
What to Bring
- Camera/Full Battery: You will want to stop every five minutes to take a photo of the coastline.
- Snacks and Water: While there are local eateries, the long stretches of the coastal road are perfect for a roadside picnic.
- Offline Maps: Signal can be intermittent in certain mountain passes, so download your Google Maps for the area beforehand.
