History
Iligan was founded as a mission by the Augustinian Recollects in 1609. The Jesuits took over the mission in 1639. The city’s name is derived from the Higaonon word “ilig”, which means “to go downstream”. The Spanish settlement was later transferred to its current location due to frequent Moro attacks. Iligan officially became a city on June 16, 1950, and was later reclassified as a highly urbanized city in 1983.

Fiesta
Iligan City’s annual fiesta is celebrated in honor of its patron saint, Saint Michael the Archangel, every September 29. The celebration is known as the “Diyandi Festival”. The term “diyandi” is a Higaonon word that means “to celebrate”or “to rejoice”. The festival features a grand street dance parade, cultural presentations, and religious activities. The Kinabayo Festival, which reenacts the battle of St. James the Apostle against the Moors, is a separate event that is not part of Iligan’s fiesta and is instead associated with Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte.
