Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV
Antonio “Sonny” Fuentes Trillanes IV is a Filipino politician and former Philippine Navy officer who served as a Senator of the Philippines for two terms (2007–2019). Known for his transition from a military rebel to a prolific legislator, Trillanes has remained a central figure in Philippine politics for over two decades. Born on August 6, 1971, in Caloocan, his career is defined by a consistent, often confrontational, stance against government corruption.
Academic and Military Foundation
Trillanes holds a Bachelor of Science in Naval Systems Engineering from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1995. He later pursued higher education at the University of the Philippines Diliman, earning a Master’s degree in Public Administration.
Before entering politics, he was a decorated Lieutenant Senior Grade in the Philippine Navy. His military career became a catalyst for his political life when he led the 2003 Oakwood Mutiny and the 2007 Manila Peninsula Siege. These acts of rebellion were protests against alleged systemic corruption within the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo administration and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
Record-Breaking Senate Career (2007–2019)
Trillanes made history in 2007 by winning a Senate seat while still incarcerated, campaigning from his jail cell with minimal resources. He was re-elected in 2013, finishing his second term in 2019.
Despite his image as a “firebrand”, Trillanes was one of the most productive members of the Senate. According to official Senate records:
- Legislative Output: He authored or co-authored 17 passed laws and was responsible for over 1,100 bills and resolutions.
- Key Legislation: He was instrumental in passing the AFP Modernization Law, the Salary Standardization Law (which increased pay for government employees and teachers), and the Magna Carta for Public Social Workers.
- Committee Leadership: He chaired the Committees on National Defense and Security, and Civil Service and Government Reorganization.
Conflict with the Duterte Administration
Trillanes was arguably the most vocal critic of President Rodrigo Duterte. In 2018, the administration issued Proclamation 572, which sought to void the amnesty granted to Trillanes in 2011 by the Aquino administration, citing a supposed failure to file the necessary paperwork. Trillanes successfully challenged this in court, producing evidence of his application and maintaining his liberty.
He was also a key figure in filing communications with the International Criminal Court (ICC), providing testimony and documentation regarding alleged extrajudicial killings in the “War on Drugs.”
Recent Political Path and 2022 Senate Run
In 2022, Trillanes ran for the Senate under the “Tropang Angat” slate of Vice President Leni Robredo. Although he was not elected, finishing with millions of votes, he conceded defeat gracefully, stating that “democracy is alive” and that he would continue his advocacy as a private citizen through the Magdalo Group. During this period, he also focused on education, teaching courses in public policy and governance.
2025 Caloocan Mayoral Bid: “Caloocan Recovery” Plan
For the 2025 midterm elections, Trillanes has shifted his focus to local governance, running for Mayor of Caloocan City against incumbent Along Malapitan. His platform, centered on transparency and social welfare, includes:
- Senior Citizen Welfare: Implementing a reliable monthly cash assistance program and specialized healthcare.
- Educational Support: Providing a ₱2,000 monthly allowance for students at the University of Caloocan City (UCC) and those in vocational programs.
- Public Health: Strengthening maternal and child health through free vaccinations and regular check-ups for infants.
- Economic Reform: Attracting investment through tax incentives for new businesses to stimulate local job creation.
- Safety and Order: A data-driven approach to reducing the city’s crime rate.
Trillanes has challenged his opponent to a public debate, asserting that “the people of Caloocan deserve to hear the platforms of those who wish to lead them.”
