Valenzuela City: Journey Through the Northern Gateway

Valenzuela City is a highly urbanized city in northern Metro Manila. It is widely known as the “Northern Gateway to Metro Manila”. The city beautifully balances a rich historical past with a rapidly developing urban landscape. It is highly accessible via major thoroughfares.

Local Government and Barangays

Mayor Wes Gatchalian currently leads the city (as of 2026). He began his second consecutive term after winning the 2025 elections. The local government oversees 33 distinct barangays split into two districts. These 33 barangays are:

District 1: Arkong Bato, Balangkas, Bignay, Bisig, Canumay East, Canumay West, Coloong, Dalandanan, Isla, Lawang Bato, Lingunan, Mabolo, Malanday, Malinta, Palasan, Pariancillo Villa, Pasolo, Poblacion, Pulo, Punturin, Rincon, Tagalag, Veinte Reales, and Wawang Pulo.

District 2: Bagbaguin, Gen. T. de Leon, Karuhatan, Mapulang Lupa, Marulas, Maysan, Parada, Paso de Blas, and Ugong.

A Glimpse into the Past

The city’s history traces back to a pre-colonial town known as “Pulo”. During Spanish colonial rule, this evolved into “Polo”. In 1960, the municipality of Valenzuela was officially created. It was named in honor of Dr. Pio Valenzuela. He was a prominent physician and a key member of the Katipunan. The town finally became a highly-urbanized city on February 14, 1998.

Valenzuela City offers a fantastic mix of cultural landmarks and modern public spaces:

• National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima: Located in Barangay Marulas, this is a very significant pilgrimage site. It is the first National Shrine in the Diocese of Malolos.
• Museo ni Dr. Pio Valenzuela: This museum sits on the site of the hero’s former residence. It beautifully depicts his inspiring life story.
• Arkong Bato: The Americans built this historic stone arch in 1910. It still marks the boundary between Malabon and Valenzuela.
• Bell Tower of San Diego de Alcala Church: This over 400-year-old belfry is a true relic. It stands proudly in Polo as one of Metro Manila’s oldest surviving church structures.
• Valenzuela City People’s Park: This is a massive community favorite. It features vibrant gardens and wide, open spaces for public social gatherings.
• Tagalag Fishing Village: This area offers a fantastic natural escape. It is a highly popular spot for local dining, relaxing fishing, and appreciating local nature.

How to Get There

As the “Northern Gateway”, Valenzuela City is exceptionally easy to reach from both Metro Manila and northern provinces:

• By Car: Two major highways heavily traverse the city. These are the MacArthur Highway and the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX). They provide quick, direct vehicular access from almost anywhere.
• By Bus/Jeepney: You can easily ride buses heading north via MacArthur Highway. Jeepneys and modern PUVs also constantly ply routes connecting Valenzuela to Caloocan, Quezon City, and Bulacan.
