Ozamiz City lies in the province of Misamis Occidental. People know it as a vibrant mix of historical sites and modern development. Because it ranks as the most populous city in the area, it thrives as a crucial center for daily life in the Mindanao region. History of Ozamiz

The city we know today originally started as an old Spanish town called Misamis. Interestingly, historians say the name “Misamis” has two possible origins. Specifically, it either comes from the Subanon word “kuyamis,” which means a variety of coconut. Alternatively, it might come from the Spanish word “Misa,” meaning Catholic Mass.

Furthermore, a major turning point happened when workers built the Fuerte de la Concepcion y del Triunfo. People widely call this stone structure Cotta Fort. They erected it between 1755 and 1756 to quickly guard against incoming pirate attacks. After that, the town of Misamis expanded heavily around the fort. Therefore, officials designated Misamis as the capital of the District of Misamis by 1850.

Following World War II, the town officially became a chartered city on July 16, 1948. Consequently, it became the fourth city established in Mindanao. Later on, leaders changed the name to Ozamiz. They did this to honor José Ozámiz, a celebrated World War II hero. He had previously served as a local governor and a Philippine senator.

Citizens elect their local government officials to serve three-year terms in office. Currently, Mayor Atty. Sam Norman G. Fuentes leads the city. Vice Mayor Simplicia “Bebie” O. Neri proudly works alongside him.
