Bacolod City: History, Tourist Spots, and Barangays
Welcome to Bacolod City, affectionately known as the “City of Smiles”. As the highly urbanized capital of Negros Occidental, this destination offers a compelling mix of deep historical roots, vibrant cultural festivals, and welcoming locals.
History of Bacolod City
The name “Bacolod” comes from the Old Hiligaynon word “bakólod”, meaning a hill or stonehill. The original settlement began around 1770 on elevated terrain to protect residents from frequent pirate raids. Over time, as the threat lessened, the people moved closer to the shoreline.
The settlement grew rapidly in importance throughout the 19th century. In 1849, it became the capital of the entire island of Negros. It officially achieved its status as a chartered city on October 19, 1938. Since then, the area has transformed into a bustling center for commerce and tourism in the Visayas.
Top Tourist Spots in the Area
If you plan to visit, the official local government region offers several iconic attractions that you simply cannot miss.
The Ruins
Often referred to as the “Taj Mahal of the Philippines”, The Ruins is a stunning ancestral home built in 1920 by sugar baron Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson. He built it as a monument of love for his late wife. During World War II, forces intentionally burned the mansion to prevent the Japanese from using it as a headquarters. The fire burned for three days, but the magnificent concrete frame remained. Today, it stands as a brilliant architectural landmark.
MassKara Festival
The city truly earns its nickname during the annual MassKara Festival every October. Born out of a period of economic crisis in the 1980s, the festival was created to lift the spirits of the locals. “MassKara” combines “mass” (multitude) and “cara” (face). During the festival, dancers fill the streets wearing brightly colored, smiling masks, competing in massive dance routines and parades.
Current City Leadership
The municipality’s progress continues under the guidance of its elected government officials. Following the 2025 midterm elections, the current leaders are:
- City Mayor: Greg Gasataya
- Vice Mayor: Claudio Jesus Puentevella
