MassKara Festival: Vibrant Celebration of Bacolod City

Held every October, the MassKara Festival transforms Bacolod City. The city becomes a vibrant hub of music and joy. Dancers wear iconic smiling masks in spectacular parades. Thus, the MassKara Festival is more than a mere party. It stands as a powerful testament to local resilience.

MassKara Festival: History of Resilience

The festival began in 1980. This was a time of severe crisis for Bacolod City. Negros Occidental relied heavily on the sugar industry. Sadly, global sugar prices plummeted rapidly. This drastic drop caused massive economic hardship. The region suffered widespread famine.

Another tragedy struck on April 22, 1980. The vessel MV Don Juan sank after a collision. Many Negrense lives were tragically lost. This included prominent members of local families.

Local leaders wanted to lift the people’s spirits. They decided to create a joyful festival. They coined the term “MassKara”. It combines “mass” (multitude) and “cara” (face). The smiling masks became a symbol of survival. The people chose to triumph over extreme adversity with a smile.
