STI West Negros University: The Largest University in Bacolod City

STI West Negros University (STI WNU), affectionately known to locals as “West Neg”, stands out as the largest university in Bacolod City by student population. Located prominently along Burgos Street in Negros Occidental, this massive educational institution boasts an enrollment consistently reaching around 14,000 to 15,000 students per school year.

History of STI West Negros University

The history of this university is a story of continuous growth and commitment to education. Three Baptist women leaders Luciana Aritao, Teresa Padilla, and Rosario Remitio originally founded it on February 14, 1948, as West Negros College (WNC).

In 1951, the institution re-established itself as a non-sectarian school at its present location. Decades of expanding programs and improving facilities followed. Finally, on February 11, 2008, the Commission on Higher Education officially granted the school university status.

A major turning point occurred in 2013 when STI Education Systems Holdings, Inc. acquired a controlling interest in the university. It officially changed its name to STI West Negros University in 2014, and shortly after, merged operations with the nearby STI College campus, solidifying its dominant presence in Bacolod City.
