History Behind Araw ng Kagitingan
The observance traces its roots back to the tragic Fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. After months of intense fighting, Major General Edward P. King Jr. faced a difficult choice. He surrendered more than 76,000 starving and sick troops to the advancing Japanese Imperial Army. These brave men then suffered the incredibly grueling Bataan Death March. They forcibly walked over 100 kilometers from Bataan to Camp O’Donnell in Capas, Tarlac.
Thousands of soldiers sadly lost their lives during this brutal journey due to severe exhaustion, dehydration, and untreated disease. However, their fierce resistance successfully delayed the enemy advance across the Pacific. Their immense sacrifice bought precious time for the Allied forces to reorganize and counterattack. They eventually turned the tide of the war.
How We Commemorate Araw ng Kagitingan Today
The Philippine government originally established this day as “Bataan Day” in 1961 through Republic Act No. 3022. Officials later renamed the holiday to Araw ng Kagitingan to respect all heroes from Bataan, Corregidor, and other major battlegrounds. Today, the President usually leads a solemn, nationwide ceremony at the historic Mt. Samat National Shrine in Pilar, Bataan. Many cities also hold local parades and memorial services to honor the veterans.
