Laoag City

Laoag City, known as the “Sunshine City,” is the capital of Ilocos Norte, Philippines. It is the largest city in northern Luzon and serves as the province’s political, commercial, and industrial hub. The name “Laoag” is derived from an Ilocano term meaning light or brightness, describing the city’s clear atmosphere and blue skyline.

First occupied by the Spaniards in 1572, Laoag has grown into a thriving city with a population of 111,651 based on the 2020 census. It is the northernmost city in the Philippines and houses the busiest commercial airport in the Ilocos Region. The city is bordered by the municipalities of San Nicolas, Paoay, Sarrat, Piddig, Vintar, and Bacarra, with the Cordillera Central mountain range to the east and the South China Sea to the west.

Climate

Laoag experiences a monsoon climate, with a dry season from November to April and a wet season from May to October. Despite being affected by typhoons, it retains its title as the “Sunshine City.”
