Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA)

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is a premier professional basketball league in the United States, showcasing the top talent in women’s basketball since its inception. Founded in 1996, with its inaugural season in 1997, the league continues to grow in scope, visibility, and influence.

League Structure

As of the 2025 season, the WNBA features 13 teams following the expansion that introduced the Golden State Valkyries based in San Francisco. These teams are divided into two conferences:

The WNBA no longer uses a divisional structure; each team competes within its conference.

Season Format

The regular season runs from May to September, with each team playing 44 games – the longest regular season in league history. The top eight teams overall (regardless of conference) advance to the WNBA Playoffs, which conclude with the WNBA Finals.
