The Sleeping Dinosaur: Mati's Ridgeline Viewpoint
Just before you drop into Mati City, the road bends at a hillside lookout over Pujada Bay, where a forested ridge settles into the water in the unmistakable shape of a sleeping dinosaur. It is free, it takes ten minutes, and at sunrise it is the best view in Davao Oriental. Here is where to stand, when to go, and what to expect.

A Hill That Looks Like a Dinosaur
The Sleeping Dinosaur is not an attraction with a gate and a ticket booth. It is a coastal hill on the edge of Mati whose outline, seen from the right angle, reads as a dinosaur curled up and sleeping on the shore of Pujada Bay. The name stuck, and the roadside lookout in Barangay Badas became one of the most photographed stops in Davao Oriental.
Pujada Bay itself is special: it is recognised by Les Plus Belles Baies du Monde, the Paris based club supported by UNESCO, as one of the most beautiful bays in the world, and it is one of only two in the Philippines to carry that title. The dinosaur is the quickest way to take in that whole scene.
It is a roadside stop. There is no sign reading "view deck" and no formal facility. Look for the parked vehicles and the row of small sari sari stores, and pull over where it is safe. Some private decks nearby charge a small maintenance fee of about ₱20.00 to ₱50.00.

From the Badas viewpoint
The standard stop, on the road into Mati. Free, a short walk from the shoulder, and the classic photo. Best at sunrise when the ridge silhouettes against the light.
From Pujada Bay

From the air
The Mindanao Saga Flying Club at Mati airport runs ultralight flights over Dahican and the bay, and the dinosaur is one of the landmarks you see from above.
The Best Time to Stop
Early morning is the reason to plan around this stop. The light is soft, the bay is calm, and the roadside is quiet.
Sunrise
The dinosaur faces the sunrise over the bay, and the early light makes the ridge glow. Arrive just before dawn, and you will have the viewpoint almost to yourself. The small stalls sell fresh mango and snacks.
Late afternoon
If you are arriving from Davao City, you will pass the viewpoint on the way in. Late afternoon light is warm and the bay picks up colour, though it is busier with passing traffic.
Getting to the Sleeping Dinosaur
It sits on the road into Mati City, in Barangay Badas, so you pass it whether you drive, ride a van, or take the bus from Davao City.
By bus or van
A bus or van from Davao City to Mati takes about 3 to 5 hours. Tell the driver you want the Sleeping Dinosaur stop and they will pull over on the bend before the city proper.
By private car or scooter
Drive the Mati road and pull over at the bend. Parking is informal on the shoulder or at a nearby private deck, and it is a sharp corner, so park well clear of traffic.
Combine it with the city tour
It pairs naturally with the Subangan Museum and the Dahican Beach afternoon. A bao bao or tricycle day tour of Mati usually folds all three into one loop.
