The City Government of Butuan has rolled out a free carpooling and bus service to help residents participate in Panaad 2026, the annual penitential pilgrimage walk, amid soaring fuel prices that have made travel costs a concern for many families.
Under the program, 10 buses have been deployed to provide free transportation services for devotees. Designated pick-up points have been established across Butuan City where individuals can safely join shared rides heading to Sitio Panaad, the pilgrimage destination. These same pick-up points also serve as designated drop-off locations for the return trip.
The initiative was launched in response to high fuel prices that have placed an additional burden on Butuanons who wish to take part in the annual tradition of Panaad — a Cebuano term meaning “promise” or “vow” — where devotees undertake a pilgrimage on foot as an act of faith, thanksgiving, or petition.
City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (CDRRMD) Head Mark Yap reminded participants to take necessary precautions during the pilgrimage, especially given the expected high temperatures during the summer months. He advised devotees to bring water, wear appropriate clothing, and be mindful of their physical condition throughout the journey.
The carpooling program reflects the city government’s commitment to making community traditions accessible to all residents, regardless of economic circumstances. By providing free transportation, the local government ensures that financial constraints do not prevent Butuanons from participating in this meaningful cultural and religious practice.
Panaad 2026 is expected to draw thousands of participants from across Butuan City and neighboring towns in the Caraga Region. The pilgrimage is one of the most anticipated spiritual events in the area, bringing together families and communities in a shared expression of faith.
