Metro Manilas most iconic thoroughfare is about to undergo a major transformation. The long-awaited rehabilitation of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) is set to begin in mid-June 2026, with the government rolling out comprehensive traffic management plans to minimize disruptions for millions of daily commuters.
The EDSA rehabilitation is part of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.s Build Better More infrastructure program, which aims to alleviate chronic traffic congestion along the 24-kilometer highway that serves as the backbone of Metro Manilas road network. The project is expected to be completed by 2027.
Traffic Management Measures
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has been working closely with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to ensure that alternative routes and traffic diversion plans are in place before construction begins. The MMDA has already demonstrated its readiness for large-scale traffic management during events like the Manila Marathon held on June 12, where portions of EDSA were temporarily closed.
Motorists are advised to expect heavy traffic along EDSAs southbound and northbound lanes during the initial phases of rehabilitation. The government has encouraged the use of public transportation, carpooling, and alternative routes such as C-5 Road and the Metro Manila Skyway.
A Long Time Coming
The EDSA rehabilitation project has been discussed for years, with the original schedule pushed back multiple times. Initially set to begin earlier, the start date was moved to allow for better planning and coordination among government agencies. The delay also gave authorities time to study the potential impact on businesses, schools, and communities along the EDSA corridor.
Once completed, the rehabilitated EDSA is expected to feature improved road surfaces, better drainage systems to address flooding, upgraded pedestrian facilities, and enhanced bus lanes for the EDSA Busway system.
What Commuters Should Know
Commuters are encouraged to monitor official MMDA social media channels and the DPWH website for real-time updates on road closures and traffic advisories. The government has also set up a hotline for motorists and commuters who need assistance during the rehabilitation period.
