The city of Kütahya is preparing to celebrate its rich historical and cultural heritage with the inaugural Germiyan Festival, taking place June 12-14, 2026. Named after the Germiyanoğulları Beylik (Principality), a medieval Anatolian beylik that made Kütahya its capital and a center of learning and civilization, the festival aims to showcase the region’s deep-rooted cultural legacy to both locals and visitors.
Celebrating a Forgotten Legacy
The Germiyan Festival was conceived to correct misconceptions about Anatolian Turkish history and highlight the Germiyanoğulları’s immense contributions to science, culture, and civilization. The beylik, which originated from the Khwarezm cultural basin, established Kütahya as a prominent center of knowledge and culture long before the Ottoman period. Far from being merely a territorial addition to the Ottoman Empire, the Germiyanoğulları brought trained manpower, scholarly knowledge, and a powerful cultural legacy that helped shape the rise of the Ottoman state.
What to Expect at the Festival
The three-day festival promises a wide variety of activities designed for attendees of all ages. Highlights include:
- Traditional Costume Fashion Shows: Local designers will present Kütahya’s traditional attire, celebrating the region’s unique textile heritage — perfect inspiration for custom apparel and embroidery designs.
- Symposiums and Seminars: Academic sessions on the Germiyan legacy offering deep dives into Anatolian history.
- Concerts and Cultural Performances: Live music and traditional performances throughout the festival grounds.
- Children’s Activities: Cartoon screenings about Kütahya history, workshops, and family-friendly programs.
- Competitions: Various contests celebrating local culture and craftsmanship.
Apparel & Textile Connections
One of the festival’s most exciting elements for apparel enthusiasts is the traditional costume fashion show. Kütahya’s yöresel kıyafetler (regional garments) feature distinctive embroidery, fabric choices, and patterns that have been passed down through generations. These designs offer incredible inspiration for modern custom apparel, from embroidered t-shirts to hoodies featuring Anatolian motifs.
The festival also highlights Kütahya’s world-famous çini (tile) artistry — those geometric patterns and vibrant cobalt-and-turquoise color schemes translate beautifully into print-on-demand designs for t-shirts, tote bags, and accessories.
Tourism & Future Plans
Organizers have made it clear that the Germiyan Festival is not intended as a one-off event. Plans are already in motion to make it an annual tradition, with ambitions to add Kütahya’s identity as “the capital of the Germiyan Beylik” to its existing titles as a city of thermal springs, tiles, and national independence.
With a comprehensive tourism master plan prepared by Kapadokya University in collaboration with the Kütahya Governorship, the festival is positioned as a major step toward boosting the region’s cultural tourism potential.
