One of Hokkaido’s most anticipated summer events, the Hokkaido Shrine Festival (also known as the Sapporo Festival), kicks off today, June 14, 2026, and runs through June 16 at Hokkaido Shrine in Sapporo. This marks over 100 years of tradition celebrating the region’s culture, history, and community spirit.
What to Expect at the Festival
The festival features sacred Kagura dances, powerful Taiko drum performances, energetic YOSAKOI Soran dancing, traditional chanting, Urayasu dance, open-air tea ceremonies, Noh music, Gagaku court music, and Kyudo archery demonstrations. A highlight is the Mikoshi Togo procession on June 16, where deities from Hokkaido Shrine are carried through the streets on elaborately decorated portable shrines. Participants wear period costumes while float cars from across Sapporo join the parade. Ninja shows and concerts add to the excitement.
Festival Apparel & Merchandise
The Hokkaido Shrine Festival is a fantastic opportunity to showcase custom festival apparel. Attendees often wear commemorative T-shirts featuring samurai motifs, mikoshi illustrations, or the iconic shrine torii gate. Traditional happi coats remain popular, while modern festival-goers love graphic tees that blend Japanese heritage with contemporary streetwear. Custom tote bags, caps, and wristbands also make excellent souvenirs. Need custom gear for your event? PHShirt offers professional screen printing and embroidery perfect for festivals and groups.
