Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, is one of the most modern and technologically advanced venues in the NFL. Home to the San Francisco 49ers since 2014, the stadium represents a massive leap forward from the team’s previous home at Candlestick Park — both in terms of fan experience and architectural ambition.

Why the 49ers Left Candlestick Park

The 49ers played at Candlestick Park from 1971 through 2013. Originally built for baseball’s San Francisco Giants, the aging stadium had become one of the NFL’s least modern venues by the 2010s. Poor sight lines, outdated facilities, and a location prone to windy conditions at the edge of San Francisco Bay made it clear that the franchise needed a new home to stay competitive.

After years of planning and negotiations, the team chose a site in Santa Clara — about 40 miles south of San Francisco — for a state-of-the-art facility that would keep the franchise in the Bay Area while offering the space and infrastructure that Candlestick could never provide.

Construction and Cost

Ground was broken on April 19, 2012, with 49ers CEO Jed York and his family joining officials at the 50-yard line for the ceremony. The construction process moved quickly — the foundation was set just over a month later, the first steel beams went up in July 2012, and a “Topping Out” ceremony was held on December 30, 2012, when the final gold-painted steel beam was placed atop the suite tower.

The stadium cost approximately $1.2 billion to build. It covers 1.9 million square feet, with 14,000 pieces of steel held together by 127,000 bolts. More than 250 workers were on-site during peak construction. The project was completed in just over two years — a remarkable timeline for a venue of its scale.

Opening Day and Key Features

Levi’s Stadium officially opened on July 17, 2014, with an NFL game between the 49ers and the Denver Broncos. The naming rights were secured by Levi Strauss & Co., the iconic denim company founded in San Francisco in 1853 — creating a natural connection between the Bay Area’s most famous brand and its premier football venue.

The stadium seats approximately 68,500 fans, with the capacity expandable to 75,000 for special events. Key features include:

  • Over 1,600 HD TVs throughout the concourses and suites
  • A 2,000-square-foot video board in the south end zone
  • A rooftop green park with native California plants
  • More than 27,000 square feet of retail space
  • Over 100 luxury suites and 9,000 club seats
  • A dedicated 49ers museum and Hall of Fame section
  • Hosting the Super Bowl and Major Events

Levi’s Stadium has already cemented its place among the NFL’s premier venues by hosting multiple Super Bowls. Super Bowl 50 was played there on February 7, 2016, when the Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10. Super Bowl LX is also scheduled to be held at the stadium.

Beyond the NFL, the stadium hosts college football bowl games, international soccer matches, concerts, and other large-scale events. Its location in the heart of Silicon Valley also makes it a natural fit for tech conferences and corporate events. The 49ers’ growing commercial presence — including their merchandise sales dominance and fashion collaborations — shows how the franchise extends far beyond the field.

    The 49ers’ On-Field Record at Levi’s Stadium

Since moving into Levi’s Stadium, the 49ers have compiled a regular-season home record of 49-46-0 through 2026, with a perfect 6-0 record in playoff games at the venue. The team’s five Super Bowl championships and passionate fan base have made game days at Levi’s an electric experience.

The franchise has also been a leader in merchandise sales, with five players ranking in the NFLPA Top 50 merchandise list — a testament to the team’s enduring popularity across the country.

A New Era for Bay Area Football

Levi’s Stadium represents more than just a new home for the 49ers. It symbolises the franchise’s commitment to staying in the Bay Area while embracing modern stadium design and technology. For fans, it offers a dramatically improved experience over the old days at Candlestick — better sight lines, modern amenities, and a venue that reflects the innovation-driven culture of Silicon Valley.

Whether you’re a die-hard 49ers fan or just visiting for a single game, Levi’s Stadium delivers one of the NFL’s top game-day experiences.
