Mission San Luis Rey de Francia
Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, founded in 1798 by Father Fermín de Lasuén, is the largest of the 21 California missions and is often called the “King of the Missions.” At its peak, the mission controlled a vast ranching operation with over 3,000 Native American converts and 250,000 acres of land. The mission’s beautiful church, with its distinctive architecture and restored interior, is still an active parish and a popular tourist attraction. The mission grounds include a museum, gardens, and a historic cemetery.
The Oceanside Pier and Beach Culture
The Oceanside Pier, originally built in 1888 and rebuilt several times since, stretches 1,942 feet into the Pacific and is one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast. The pier is a beloved landmark and a popular spot for fishing, walking, and watching surfers. The beach surrounding the pier is wide, sandy, and perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing.
Oceanside is known for its excellent surf breaks, including the Pier, the Harbor, and Tamarack Beach.
