Vatican City — Pope Leo XIV has convoked an Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals scheduled for June 26–27, 2026, at the Vatican. The gathering of cardinals from around the world will focus on the Church’s mission to communicate God’s love, exploring themes from Pope Francis’ landmark apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel).

The Consistory will conclude on June 29 with a solemn Eucharistic celebration in St. Peter’s Basilica for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, presided over by Pope Leo XIV. During this Mass, the Pope will bless and impose the sacred pallium — a wool band worn around the shoulders — on newly appointed metropolitan archbishops from around the world. This ancient tradition, dating back to the early Church, symbolizes the archbishop’s authority and unity with the Holy See.

In a letter to the Cardinals released in April 2026, Pope Leo XIV called for deep reflection on the Church’s evangelizing mission, writing that the mission of the Church is not its own survival, but the communication of the love with which God loves the world. He warned against the temptation of proselytism or a logic of mere preservation or institutional expansion, calling instead for a renewed spirit of missionary outreach.

This Extraordinary Consistory follows a previous gathering held on January 7–8, 2026, which Pope Leo XIV described as a symbolic transition from the Francis era to his own pontificate. The contributions gathered at that first consistory were described by the Pope as a resource of lasting value to be further developed through ecclesial discernment.

The Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29 is one of the most significant feast days in the Vatican City calendar. It honors Saint Peter — the first Bishop of Rome and keeper of the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven — and Saint Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles. Both were martyred in Rome under Emperor Nero, and their tombs lie within the Vatican and the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls respectively.

For pilgrims and visitors in Rome during late June, the Consistory and the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul offer a rare opportunity to witness the universal Church in action. Cardinals in their distinctive crimson robes, solemn liturgies in St. Peter’s Basilica, and the blessing of the pallia make this a visually stunning and spiritually profound period in Vatican City.

The Extraordinary Consistory of June 2026 confirms Pope Leo XIV’s emphasis on collegiality — working with the College of Cardinals as a team to guide the Church’s direction. The focus on evangelization, missionary reform, and the authentic proclamation of the Gospel reflects the priorities of his young pontificate.
