Rochester sits on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, and its identity is inseparable from water. The Genesee River runs right through the city center, and the Erie Canal – the 19th-century engineering marvel that connected the Great Lakes to the Atlantic – passes through downtown. For first-time visitors, Rochester offers a mid-sized American city experience with world-class museums, a surprisingly vibrant arts scene, and easy access to the natural beauty of the Finger Lakes region.

Getting There and Getting Around

Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) is about 7 miles south of downtown, with direct flights from major East Coast hubs and Chicago. The city is roughly a 5-hour drive from New York City and about 3.5 hours from Buffalo. Amtrak service connects Rochester to the Empire Corridor line with stops in Syracuse, Albany, and New York City. Within the city, a car is the most practical option, though the RTS bus system covers the main corridors and ride-sharing is widely available.

What to See and Do

The George Eastman Museum is Rochester’s crown jewel – the world’s oldest photography museum, housed in the mansion of Kodak’s founder. The collection spans the entire history of photography and film, and the mansion itself is a stunning example of Colonial Revival architecture. The gardens are worth a visit on their own. The Strong National Museum of Play is unlike any other museum you’ve visited. Dedicated entirely to the concept of play, it houses the World Video Game Hall of Fame, the National Toy Hall of Fame, and interactive exhibits that appeal to adults just as much as children. It’s the kind of place where you walk in thinking it’s a kids’ museum and walk out two hours later having built a robot and played arcade games from the 1980s. Highland Park is Rochester’s answer to Central Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (who also designed Central Park). The annual Lilac Festival in May draws over 50,000 visitors and fills the park with the scent of more than 500 varieties of lilacs. Even outside of lilac season, the park is a peaceful escape from the city. The High Falls on the Genesee River are a dramatic 96-foot waterfall right in the middle of downtown. The viewing platforms and the Pont de Rennes pedestrian bridge give you excellent vistas of the falls and the old mill buildings that line the gorge. The surrounding High Falls District has restaurants and bars with waterfall views.

Where to Eat

Rochester has its own signature dish: the Garbage Plate. Born at Nick Tahou Hots in the 1920s, it’s a glorious mess of macaroni salad, home fries, baked beans, and your choice of hot dogs or hamburgers, all topped with mustard, onions, and a secret meat sauce. It’s not health food, but it’s a Rochester rite of passage. Beyond the Garbage Plate, the city’s food scene has grown significantly. The South Wedge and Park Avenue neighborhoods are packed with independent restaurants, craft breweries, and coffee roasters. The Public Market on Saturdays is a sensory overload of fresh produce, prepared foods, and local vendors – a great place to grab breakfast and people-watch.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through fall is the best window. May is peak lilac season, and June through September brings warm days perfect for exploring the parks and the Genesee Riverway Trail. Autumn is spectacular – the Finger Lakes region just east of the city puts on one of the best fall foliage displays in the Northeast. Winter is cold and snowy, but Rochester embraces it with ice skating, winter festivals, and a cozy pub culture.

Practical Tips

Rochester is very affordable compared to New York City or Boston. Hotels and meals are reasonably priced, and many attractions have free or low-cost admission. The downtown and park neighborhoods are generally safe. If you’re visiting in winter, bring a proper coat – lake-effect snow is real and temperatures can drop into the single digits. Tipping follows standard US norms. The city makes an excellent base for day trips to the Finger Lakes wine region, Letchworth State Park, and Niagara Falls.
