Taiwan has taken a major step toward strengthening its defense capabilities with the Cabinet unveiling a proposed NT$210 billion (approximately US$6.6 billion) special budget dedicated to the development and deployment of domestic military drones.
The ambitious plan, announced on Thursday, aims to accelerate Taiwans drone defense program in response to growing security challenges in the region. The budget would fund the procurement of thousands of unmanned aerial systems across multiple categories, from short-range reconnaissance drones to long-endurance surveillance platforms.
Army officials have already announced plans to deploy a dedicated drone battalion in Penghu County, the archipelago off Taiwans western coast that holds strategic importance in the defense of the Taiwan Strait. This would represent one of the first large-scale military drone deployments in the region.
