ZAMBOANGA CITY — Over 248,000 students returned to classrooms across Zamboanga City on Monday, June 8, 2026, marking the official start of School Year 2026-2027. The opening day coincided with a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Sarangani province at 7:37 a.m., sending strong tremors through the city.

Mayor Khymer Olaso ordered the suspension of classes at all levels as a precautionary measure. Work in local and national government offices was also suspended, though essential and frontline services continued normal operations.

Phivolcs recorded Intensity IV in Zamboanga City from the tectonic earthquake (depth 33 km, epicenter 32 km SW of Maasim, Sarangani). A tsunami warning prompted forced evacuations of 255 families or 1,010 individuals from coastal barangays, particularly along the east coast.

Mayor Olaso directed structural integrity inspections of all school buildings before resumption. Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Councils coordinated with schools and traffic enforcers for student safety.

As the new school year starts, many schools need custom school shirts and uniforms. Whether you need PE uniforms, organization shirts, or event shirts, check out the Zamboanga City collection for local-themed apparel.
