Historical Transformation and Growth
The institution’s journey began in 1907 as part of the Leyte Provincial School, becoming a separate entity in 1915 as the Leyte Trade School funded by the provincial government. In 1953, after 38 years of operation, Republic Act No. 406 renamed it the National Provincial Trade School with joint funding from national and provincial governments to support a wider curriculum.
A significant transformation occurred in 1961 when Republic Act No. 1561 converted the school into the Leyte Regional School of Arts and Trades, authorizing it to serve as a training institution for vocational and industrial education throughout Eastern Visayas. On June 19, 1965, Republic Act 4572 further elevated the institution to a chartered college, renaming it the Leyte Institute of Technology effective school year 1965-66.
Strategic Expansion and Integration
Starting in 1999, the institute began establishing satellite campuses to extend its reach across Leyte province. Pursuant to Board Resolutions No. 59, series of 1999, two CHED supervised institutions in Leyte were integrated into the Leyte Institute of Technology: the Leyte College of Arts and Trades and the Burauen Polytechnic College. This integration marked the beginning of the university’s multi-campus system.
The LIT Dulag Campus commenced operations in school year 2000-2001, followed by the addition of the Carigara School of Fisheries as part of the second phase of CSI integration to State Universities and Colleges. On August 7, 2004, Republic Act No. 9311 was passed, converting the Leyte Institute of Technology into Eastern Visayas State University, marking the institution’s elevation to full university status.
Regional Leadership and Impact
As the oldest higher educational institution in Eastern Visayas, EVSU has established itself as a leader in providing advanced education, higher technological instruction, and professional training in trade, fishery, agriculture, forestry, science, education, commerce, architecture, and engineering. The university’s multi-campus structure ensures that quality higher education is accessible to students throughout Leyte province, reducing geographic barriers to educational attainment.
Specialized Programs and Research Focus
The university maintains strong programs in technical and vocational education, reflecting its origins as a trade school while expanding into comprehensive academic offerings. The College of Technology continues the institution’s tradition of excellence in practical skills training, while the College of Engineering addresses the region’s growing need for technical professionals in infrastructure and industrial development.
The College of Education produces teachers who serve schools throughout Eastern Visayas, while the College of Business and Entrepreneurship supports local economic development by preparing graduates for business leadership roles. The College of Arts and Sciences provides foundational education in critical disciplines that support both professional programs and liberal arts education.
