Origins in Calbayog
The institution’s journey began in 1948 with the establishment of Calbayog High School, created specifically to cater to underprivileged students in Calbayog. On June 21, 1959, Republic Act 2441 was passed into law to establish the Tiburcio Tancinco Memorial Vocational School, named after prominent judge Tiburcio Tancinco. This legislation provided the foundation for what would become a major educational institution in Northwest Samar.
Technological Institute Development
The institution continued its evolution on November 14, 1982, when Batas Pambansa 304 was passed into law, converting the vocational school into the Tiburcio Tancinco Memorial Institute of Science and Technology. This conversion expanded the institution’s mandate to include science and technology education, marking a significant step in its academic development.
On June 14, 1998, Republic Act 8655 renamed the Samar National Agricultural School to Samar State College of Agriculture and Fisheries, which would later become the San Jorge campus of the university. On October 14, 2009, Republic Act No. 9719 was signed into law, renaming the Tiburcio Tancinco Memorial Institute of Science and Technology into Northwest Samar State University.
