Slovenia is gearing up for one of the biggest cycling events in Europe as Ljubljana prepares to host the 2026 UEC Road European Championships from October 2–7, 2026. And for Slovenian cycling fans, the excitement is off the charts — because their homegrown hero, Tadej Pogačar, will be defending his European title on home roads.

A Homecoming for the Tour de France Champion

Pogačar, a four-time Tour de France winner and one of the most dominant cyclists of his generation, has made it clear that racing in front of a Slovenian crowd is something he has been looking forward to. The hilly Ljubljana-to-Sencur course is tailor-made for a rider of his climbing and attacking abilities, and fans are already snapping up vantage points along the route.

The event features elite mens and womens road races, time trials, and under-23 and junior categories. The womens elite road race covers 130 km on October 3, while the mens elite road race spans 196 km on October 4. Riders from over 40 European nations will compete for the coveted European champions jersey.

The course winds through the scenic Slovenian countryside just outside the capital, offering spectacular views of the Julian Alps and the rolling green hills that make Slovenia one of Europes most beautiful cycling destinations.

Slovenias Cycling Culture

While Pogačar is the countrys most famous cyclist, Slovenia has produced a remarkable number of world-class riders relative to its small population of just 2.1 million. The countrys cycling infrastructure has grown dramatically in recent years, with dedicated bike paths, cycling tourism routes, and events drawing amateur riders from around the world.

The European Championships are expected to bring thousands of visitors to Ljubljana, boosting tourism and putting Slovenias cycling culture on full display. Local businesses, cafes, and restaurants along the race route are already planning special events and viewing parties.

Get Your Gear Ready

Whether you are planning to attend the championships in person or cheering from home, there is no better time to show your love for Slovenian cycling. From Pogačar-inspired jerseys to custom Slovenia-themed cycling apparel, fans are celebrating in style.

Stay tuned for more updates as the October event approaches. Go Slovenia!
