The Balangay Festival is a beloved tradition that honors Butuan deep historical roots, particularly its connection to the ancient balangay boats that symbolize the city maritime legacy and the spirit of community — known locally as Balangayan.

This year festival carries the theme of unity and resilience, with organizers emphasizing that the celebration is more than just a series of events — it is a powerful reminder of who the people of Butuan are as a community. In every challenge faced, the Balangayan spirit continues to shine through.

Welcome performances are being conducted daily from 5:00 AM until 5:00 PM, running through May 24, 2026. The festivities feature a wide array of activities including cultural shows, trade fairs, sports competitions, and community gatherings that showcase the best of Butuanon talent and enterprise.

In recognition of the festival significance, Proclamation No. 1214 series of 2026 declared May 19, 2026, a special non-working day in Butuan City, giving residents the opportunity to fully participate in the celebrations.
