Bislig City in Surigao del Sur is reaping the rewards of sports tourism as the 2026 Palarong Pambansa drives a wave of visitors to its famous natural attractions. The city government reported that 180 visitors — including athletes, coaches, and game officials — recently flocked to Tinuy-an Falls, also known as the “Little Niagara of the Philippines,” and the scenic Bislig Baywalk.
The 2026 Palarong Pambansa, hosted in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur with Bayugan City as co-host, ran from May 25 to May 31, bringing together student-athletes from across the country. While the main competitions took place at the Gov. D.O. Plaza Sports Complex, many delegates used their rest days to explore nearby destinations, making Bislig City a major beneficiary of the sporting event.
According to the Bislig City government, visitors came from all over the Philippines, including the National Capital Region, CALABARZON, BARMM, Western Visayas, the Negros Island Region, and various Mindanao provinces. They explored the eco-trails around the multi-tiered Tinuy-an Falls before heading to the Bislig Baywalk to enjoy the Pacific sunset.
“We are so incredibly grateful to all the athletes, coaches, and Palarong Pambansa guests who chose to make memories in our beautiful city. Your visits keep our community thriving and our smiles bright,” the city government said.
Tinuy-an Falls: Caraga’s Premier Natural Attraction
Tinuy-an Falls, located in Barangay Burboanan, is a breathtaking 95-meter-wide, 55-meter-high multi-tiered waterfall often called the “Little Niagara of the Philippines.” It is co-managed by the city tourism office and the Manobo Tribal Council, making it a unique destination showcasing both natural beauty and indigenous heritage. Visitors can enjoy bamboo raft rides near the base of the falls and witness stunning rainbows that form in the morning mist between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.
Preparations and Partnerships
Department of Tourism – Caraga Region (DOT-13) Director Ivonnie Dumadag noted that preparations began over a year in advance, including training sessions for tourism workers and enforcement of standards among accredited establishments. “We congratulate and thank Bislig City for their support to the Palarong Pambansa’s host province,” Dumadag said.
For groups and delegations planning trips to Bislig City, custom souvenir shirts and event apparel are excellent ways to commemorate visits. School organizations can also explore custom shirts for school events to strengthen group identity during educational trips.
Sports Tourism and Economic Impact
Beyond the athletic competitions, the Palarong Pambansa has stimulated local economic activity, benefiting tour operators, food vendors, hotels, and transportation services. The Bislig Baywalk has become a popular gathering spot, offering a coastal promenade for evening strolls and community events.
Schools and sports teams preparing for future competitions can order custom sports jerseys and team uniforms to build team spirit and showcase school pride.
The tourism boom sparked by the Palarong Pambansa positions Bislig City as a rising ecotourism destination in Mindanao. With its natural wonders, warm hospitality, and growing recognition, the “Booming City by the Bay” is ready to welcome more visitors in the years ahead.
