A critically endangered Philippine freshwater crocodile was rescued in Kidapawan City after being spotted at a creek in Barangay San Isidro, highlighting the city’s role as a vital habitat for some of the world’s most threatened wildlife species.

The rescue operation took place on June 2, 2026, when a 16-year-old resident noticed the reptile while tying his goat near the creek. The young resident’s quick thinking and immediate reporting to authorities enabled a swift and safe rescue by the wildlife team from the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Cotabato, operating under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12).

According to initial assessments, the crocodile measured 5.7 feet in length and weighed 35 kilos. Remarkably, no visible injuries were found on the animal, suggesting it had been living in the creek area without significant human-wildlife conflict. The crocodile was subsequently transferred to the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) Wildlife Rescue Center for thorough observation and care before being released into an appropriate and protected habitat.

The Philippine freshwater crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis) is endemic to the Philippines and is considered one of the world’s most threatened crocodile species. Protected under Republic Act No. 9147, also known as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, the species faces ongoing threats from habitat loss and human activities across its remaining range.

DENR-12 commended the residents of Barangay San Isidro for their prompt reporting and for following proper procedures when dealing with wildlife. Their responsible actions underscore the importance of community participation in conservation efforts, especially in areas like Kidapawan City where urban and natural environments intersect.

Kidapawan City, situated at the foot of Mount Apo, is known for its rich biodiversity and proximity to some of Mindanao’s most important natural reserves. The presence of a critically endangered species in the city’s waterways serves as both a point of pride and a reminder of the responsibility locals share in protecting these creatures and their habitats.

Authorities continue to urge the public to report wildlife sightings to proper authorities, emphasizing that timely intervention is vital in safeguarding endangered species and supporting broader conservation efforts across the region. Residents who encounter wildlife are advised not to approach or attempt to capture the animals but to immediately contact DENR-12 or local officials.
