Kidapawan City Mayor Paolo Evangelista has issued a stern warning against opportunistic business owners as fuel prices in North Cotabato province soared to 75 pesos per liter in early March 2026, urging fair pricing and consumer protection across the city.

The surge in fuel costs prompted consumers to stockpile diesel, with many motorists flocking to gas stations offering even slight discounts. In response, Mayor Evangelista activated the Local Price Coordinating Council led by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to closely monitor pricing across the city.

Strong Stance Against Price Manipulation

In a statement released on March 9, 2026, the Kidapawan City mayor made it clear that the local government would not hesitate to revoke business permits and shut down establishments — particularly gas stations — that raise prices beyond the levels set by the Department of Energy (DOE).

The city government is monitoring not only petroleum prices but also essential commodities including rice, canned goods, soap, and other grocery items. Mayor Evangelista clarified that selling above the DTI Suggested Retail Price (SRP) would be considered economic sabotage.

Fuel Subsidy for Tricycle Drivers

To prevent fare hikes that would directly burden students and senior citizens, the Kidapawan City government announced a fuel subsidy rollout for cooperative tricycle drivers. The mayor emphasized that raising fares should be a last resort, and encouraged the public to report drivers who overcharge under the guise of high fuel costs.

Raising fares is a last resort to protect the allowances of students and seniors, Evangelista said, adding that the city remains committed to supporting both commuters and transport workers during the fuel crisis.

Broader Impact Across Cotabato

The fuel price crisis has had ripple effects across the region. Sultan Kudarat Governor Datu Pax Ali Mangudadatu pushed for a return to alternative education modes and a temporary suspension of excise taxes, noting that students and teachers make up a significant portion of commuters affected by rising transport costs.

Kidapawan City, as the commercial and trading hub of North Cotabato, plays a critical role in ensuring price stability for the entire province. The mayor decisive actions reflect the city government commitment to protecting consumers while supporting local businesses through fair and transparent pricing practices.
