Lapu-Lapu City is celebrating its 65th Charter Day with a month-long series of events, a special non-working holiday, and a ₱3,000 incentive for city government employees.
Mayor Ma. Cynthia King-Chan announced on June 3 that regular and casual employees of the Lapu-Lapu City Government will receive a ₱3,000 incentive as part of the commemoration. Under Proclamation 1276, June 17 has been declared a special non-working holiday in the city, giving residents the opportunity to participate in the various activities lined up for the milestone celebration.
The festivities opened on June 1 with a Pride Walk promoting diversity and inclusivity. Among the most anticipated events is the Mugna Competition, running from June 9 to 11, where 30 barangays showcase their creativity in a street design contest featuring local artists and designers. This colorful competition transforms city streets into canvases that reflect Oponganon culture and identity.
The city will also participate in Independence Day activities at the Mactan Shrine on June 12, followed by a Tourism Caravan on June 15 offering exclusive discounts and promotions for residents.
The Charter Day grand parade on June 17 will honor the city’s gold medalists from Palarong Pambansa, along with recognition rites and awards for outstanding barangays. Following the parade, a celebrity basketball exhibition game features actors and athletes including Aljur Abrenica, Diego Loyzaga, Jairus Aquino, and Cebu basketball legend Dondon Hontiveros.
Organizations preparing for the parade can design custom shirts for group events to showcase their identity. The celebrity basketball game also highlights the value of custom basketball jerseys for local leagues and tournaments.
The city also launched the One Lapu-Lapu app, a digital platform improving access to government services. This tech-forward initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize public service while celebrating the city’s rich history from the Battle of Mactan to its establishment as a chartered city via Republic Act No. 3134 in 1961.
Whether organizing a barangay float, school contingent, or sports team, having quality event shirts and uniforms makes all the difference. As Lapu-Lapu City marks 65 years, the celebration is a testament to the community pride that defines every Oponganon.
