Lapu-Lapu City celebrated its victorious athletes from the recently concluded Palarong Pambansa in a heartfelt recognition ceremony at City Hall on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. Mayor Ma. Cynthia King-Chan led the event, honoring the medal-winning Oponganon athletes who brought pride to the city through outstanding performances on the national stage.
Mayor Chan expressed gratitude to the athletes for their dedication and sacrifices, acknowledging that their achievements inspire the entire community. She also recognized the crucial support of coaches, parents, guardians, and the Department of Education in developing the city’s young talent.
Cash incentives were announced: P50,000 for gold medalists, P30,000 for silver, and P10,000 for bronze, underscoring the city government’s commitment to sports development. Incentives for coaches are still being finalized.
Among the honorees was Cherry Fabrique, who won gold in the secondary girls’ archery team event. Avegail Alpanta shared an inspiring story of overcoming challenges to bring home two gold medals and one bronze in arnis, showcasing the discipline that defines Lapu-Lapu City’s athletes.
Arnis coach Steven C. Alsong described the recognition as the fulfillment of a dream that began 14 years ago promoting arnis in local schools. DepEd representatives noted that Lapu-Lapu City’s athletes stood out not only for performance but for the strong institutional support they received.
These athletes and their schools often represent their communities in matching school uniforms and team kits that build unity and identity. For sports teams looking to equip their athletes, quality custom sports uniforms boost morale and create a professional look on competition day.
Mayor Chan assured the delegation that the city government will continue strengthening sports programs and improving coaching support, particularly in events where Lapu-Lapu City has traditionally excelled. She encouraged athletes to begin preparing for next year’s Palarong Pambansa in Quezon City.
The athletes will also be featured in the grand Charter Day parade on June 17, marching alongside barangay contingents as symbols of the city’s sporting excellence. Schools and clubs planning for tournaments can explore customized jerseys and uniforms to ensure their teams stand out.
The recognition ceremony is part of Lapu-Lapu City’s broader push to develop homegrown talent and create pathways for young Oponganon athletes to excel nationally. With continued investment in grassroots sports, the city is building a lasting legacy of athletic achievement and community pride.
