Gold Rush Origins and Luther Menifee Wilson
Menifee is named after Luther Menifee Wilson, a miner who discovered a significant gold-bearing quartz ledge near present-day Holland and Murrieta roads in 1883. Wilson filed a claim with the San Diego County Recorder’s office for the new “Menifee” mine, and the area became known as the Menifee Valley. While the gold rush was short-lived, the name stuck and became the identity of the community that would eventually grow into a city.
Sun City and Master-Planned Growth
The modern development of Menifee began in the early 1960s with Sun City, an active retirement community conceptualized by Del Webb, the legendary developer who also created Sun City, Arizona. Sun City remains a major part of Menifee, with a mix of residential and commercial activity, golf courses, and community centers. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Menifee area grew as a master-planned community with Quail Valley and other developments. The city incorporated in 2008 to gain local control over planning and services.
