The wait is finally over. On Thursday, June 11, 2026, the 2026 FIFA World Cup officially kicks off as host nation Mexico takes on South Africa at the legendary Estadio Ciudad de México — better known around the world as the Estadio Azteca.

This marks the third time this iconic stadium has hosted a World Cup opening match, following 1970 and 1986. It is the only stadium in the world to hold that distinction, cementing its place in football history. The 2026 edition is also historic in scope: for the first time, 48 national teams are competing across three host nations — Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

For Mexican fans, this opening match is more than just a game. It’s a national moment. The streets of Mexico City are already painted green, white, and red as supporters flood into the capital from every corner of the country. Taquerías, cantinas, and plazas are packed with fans wearing the iconic Mexico jersey, many custom-printed with names like Raúl Jiménez, Hirving Lozano, and Memo Ochoa.

Security is tight. Mexican authorities have deployed over 99,000 military and security personnel across the three host cities, backed by 2,136 vehicles, 33 drones, and 145 aircraft. An air exclusion zone is in effect around the Estadio Azteca, and road closures began early Thursday morning to manage the expected crowd of 87,000 inside the stadium.

A major Fan Fest has been set up at the Zócalo, Mexico City’s main plaza, where giant screens will broadcast the match for tens of thousands of fans who couldn’t get tickets. In total, 18 official Fan Fest venues are operating across the capital, offering free viewing parties, food stalls, and live entertainment.

The weather forecast calls for possible rain and thunderstorms, typical for Mexico City’s rainy season, but that hasn’t dampened spirits. Fans are stocking up on rain ponchos, foam fingers, flags, and — of course — match-day t-shirts and jerseys. Custom-printed fan apparel is flying off the racks at markets and pop-up shops throughout the city.

Whether you’re lucky enough to be inside the Estadio Azteca or watching from a Fan Fest, from a sports bar, or from home, today is a day every Mexican fan will remember. The 2026 World Cup has arrived, and it starts with El Tri.

Get your Mexico World Cup gear ready and show your support. This is our tournament. ¡Vamos México!
