The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, headlined by global superstar Shakira in her record fourth World Cup appearance.

The ceremony, which ran approximately 20 minutes before the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, featured an all-star lineup of Latin music icons. Shakira performed the tournament’s official anthem “Dai Dai” alongside Nigerian artist Burna Boy, marking her fourth time contributing to a World Cup — following performances at Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, and Brazil 2014.

Mexican rock legends Maná opened the show, followed by Venezuelan singer Danny Ocean performing “Partidazo.” One of the night’s most electrifying moments came when Los Ángeles de Azul and Belinda took the stage with their hit “Por Ella.” Colombian reggaeton star J Balvin kept the energy high before Shakira’s grand finale, which ended with spectacular fireworks cascading from the stadium roof.

Lila Downs served as emcee, delivering a moving address: “Football carries the same heartbeat and unites generations. It is not defined by players or countries, but by all of us. Welcome to Mexico. Welcome to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”

The ceremony also featured a parade of flags from all 48 participating nations, accompanied by Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and South Korean artist Ejae. The World Cup trophy rose from the center circle as the stadium erupted.

Mexico City’s celebration extended far beyond the stadium. According to local government officials, half a million people gathered across the capital. The Zócalo Fan Fest drew 100,000 fans, while 120,000 celebrated at the Ángel de la Independencia after Mexico’s 2-0 victory over South Africa.

For fans looking to show their support, official Mexico national team jerseys and World Cup commemorative apparel are in high demand. Historic downtown merchants reported jersey prices ranging from 100 to 400 pesos for unofficial merchandise, while official team gear sold out at authorized retailers.

The 2026 World Cup continues through July 19, with Mexico’s next Group A match against South Korea on June 19.
