New Rochelle is one of those places that flies under the radar for international visitors, despite being just 20 miles from midtown Manhattan. The city sits on Long Island Sound with a surprisingly long coastline for its size, and its history stretches back to 1688 when French Huguenot refugees founded the settlement. Today, New Rochelle is a diverse, mid-sized city with a revitalized downtown, waterfront parks, and easy access to both New York City and the Connecticut coast.
Getting There and Getting Around
New Rochelle is one of the most transit-accessible suburbs in the New York metro area. Metro-North trains from Grand Central Terminal take about 30 to 35 minutes, and the New Rochelle station is right in the center of the city. The Bee-Line bus system covers local routes, and I-95 runs through the city for those driving. If you’re staying in New York City, New Rochelle makes for an easy day trip or a quieter alternative to Manhattan hotels.
What to See and Do
Glen Island Park is New Rochelle’s hidden gem. Accessible by a short causeway, the park sits on Long Island Sound with beaches, picnic areas, and walking trails that offer views of the sound and the distant Throgs Neck Bridge. In summer, the park hosts concerts and community events, and the sunsets over the water are genuinely beautiful. The Thomas Paine National Historical Association site preserves the final home and grave of the revolutionary writer whose pamphlets helped inspire the American Revolution. The museum is small but well-curated, and the grounds include a working farm and a wildflower meadow. It’s a quiet, reflective stop that most visitors to the area never know about. Downtown New Rochelle has undergone significant revitalization in recent years, with new residential buildings, restaurants, and the New Rochelle Public Library anchoring the area. The library itself is an architectural standout, with a modern design that hosts art exhibitions and community events. For shopping and dining, North Avenue and the surrounding blocks offer a mix of independent shops and chain restaurants. The city’s diverse population means you’ll find Caribbean, Italian, Latin American, and Asian eateries within a few blocks of each other.
Where to Eat
New Rochelle’s dining scene reflects its diversity. The city has a strong Italian-American community, and the pizza and pasta at local spots are genuinely good — not tourist-trap good, but neighborhood-regular good. For something different, the Caribbean restaurants along North Avenue serve excellent jerk chicken, roti, and oxtail that reflect the city’s West Indian community. The waterfront restaurants near Glen Island offer seafood with Long Island Sound views. For coffee and pastries, the downtown cafes are solid, and several bakeries in the area turn out excellent bread and pastries that rival what you’d find in Manhattan at twice the price.
Best Time to Visit
Late spring through early fall is ideal. May through September brings warm weather perfect for the waterfront parks and outdoor events. The Fourth of July celebration at Glen Island Park is one of the biggest events in the area, with fireworks over the sound. Fall is pleasant, with fewer crowds and comfortable temperatures. Winter is cold but manageable, and the holiday season brings festive decorations to the downtown area.
Practical Tips
New Rochelle is more affordable than Manhattan for hotels and meals, and the short train ride makes it practical to stay here and commute into the city. The downtown and waterfront areas are generally safe. Metro-North tickets from Grand Central cost under $10 each way off-peak. Tipping follows standard US norms. If you’re visiting in summer, bring sunscreen for the waterfront — there’s limited shade at Glen Island Park.
