Standing at 52 Chambers Street in Manhattan, the Tweed Courthouse is arguably the most infamous courthouse ever built in New York. Construction began in 1861 under Boss Tweed, who embezzled millions during its 20-year construction. The million project cost taxpayers over 3 million.
The Scandal That Built It
Boss Tweed ran a political machine controlling New York City in the 1860s-70s. The courthouse was his graft scheme’s crown jewel. When corruption became public in 1871, Tweed was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Architectural Grandeur
Designed by John Kellum and Leopold Eidlitz, the Italianate exterior features elaborate carvings and a dramatic rotunda. WPA murals from the 1930s survive today. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
From Courthouse to City Offices
After stopping court operations in the 1960s, a major restoration completed in 2001 turned it into the NYC Department of Education headquarters — Tweed’s monument to greed now educates New York’s children.
