SM City Mindpro has launched the first Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) in the Zamboanga Peninsula region, marking a significant milestone for sustainable transportation in Zamboanga City.
The charging station, located at the Level 3 Carpark Building of SM City Mindpro, was officially unveiled on May 12 with Mayor Khymer Olaso joining SM officials for the launch ceremony. The initiative forms part of SM Supermalls’ sustainability efforts under the SM Green Movement, which promotes cleaner mobility solutions and environmentally responsible practices.
Mayor Olaso congratulated and thanked SM City Mindpro for bringing the initiative to Zamboanga City, recognizing its contribution toward environmental sustainability and innovation in the region. During an interview, the mayor also shared plans to allocate city government budget for similar initiatives in support of clean and sustainable transportation.
The EVCS is particularly timely as the Department of Energy continues to push for wider electric vehicle adoption across the Philippines. Zamboanga City’s embrace of this technology positions it as a forward-thinking urban center in Mindanao, aligning with national goals for reduced carbon emissions and sustainable urban development.
Present during the launch ceremony were SM City Mindpro Mall Manager Aileen Ann Villa-Enriquez, Assistant City Planning Coordinator Jessie Lapinid, and other SM officials. The event was part of SM’s broader commitment to integrating green technology into its operations nationwide.
Zamboanga City has been making steady progress in sustainable urban development. This EV charging station adds to the city’s growing reputation as a hub for innovation in the Zamboanga Peninsula, complementing other infrastructure developments such as the recently announced Pasonanca water impounding dam project and various tourism initiatives under the city government.
