ZAMBOANGA CITY — SM Prime Holdings opened SM City Zamboanga on Friday, March 22, marking a major milestone as the company’s 90th mall nationwide and its eighth in Mindanao. The four-level mall along Mayor Vitaliano Agan Avenue in Barangay Camino Nuevo adds 42,000 square meters of gross leasable space to the city’s retail landscape.
The new mall strengthens Zamboanga City’s position as a growing commercial hub in Western Mindanao and the island provinces of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). It is the second SM mall in the city, following SM City Mindpro, which opened in partnership with Mindpro Incorporated in December 2020.
SM City Zamboanga features anchor tenants including SM Department Store, SM Supermarket, and SM Cinema with four moviehouses — three premium regular cinemas and a specialized Directors Club. The mall also hosts the city’s first corner outdoor LED screen, a notable addition to the Zamboanga skyline.
Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso, Vice-Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco, and other city officials graced the launching which started with a mass officiated by Zamboanga Archbishop Julius Tonell. Former Mayor Celso Lobregat also attended the event, along with SM Supermalls President Steven Tan and SM Engineering Design and Development Corporation President Hans Sy, Jr.
The mall is conveniently located 10 minutes from Zamboanga International Airport and 5 minutes from the city seaport, making it easily accessible for both locals and visitors. Inside, shoppers can enjoy a mix of local and international food chains, fashion brands, and specialty shops. Community spaces such as entertainment zones and event areas are designed to host cultural and social activities.
The opening of SM City Zamboanga is expected to generate thousands of local jobs and boost economic activity in the region. It reflects growing investor confidence in Zamboanga City as a key economic center in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
