Three government numbers you’ll need to get sorted before starting any job in the Philippines: SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG. These aren’t just optional IDs — they’re mandatory contributions that both you and your employer will pay into. Without them, you can’t be legally employed in the formal sector. I’ve met plenty of fresh graduates who didn’t realize they needed to enroll in these programs before their first day.
Each of these agencies handles a different aspect of your benefits. SSS covers your retirement, disability, and maternity benefits. PhilHealth takes care of your health insurance. Pag-IBIG handles your housing loan and short-term savings. You’ll need to present your membership numbers to your employer during onboarding, so better get them ahead of time.
SSS Number Requirements for Employment
The Social Security System (SSS) is usually the first one employers ask for. Here’s how to get yours:
- Go to the nearest SSS branch or the SSS online portal to start your application
- Prepare a copy of your PSA-issued birth certificate and a valid ID
- Fill out the SSS Form E-1 (for employed members) or E-4 (for self-employed or voluntary members)
- If you’re applying online, upload your documents and wait for the confirmation via email
- Once approved, you’ll receive your SSS number, which you can then provide to your employer
- Your employer will register you as a member of their company and start monthly contributions
The best part? SSS now issues a Unified Multi-Purpose ID (UMID) that also serves as your valid government ID. Just request it when you apply, and they’ll schedule your biometrics capture.
PhilHealth Number Registration
PhilHealth is your health insurance coverage as an employee. Here’s how to get your number:
- Visit the PhilHealth website and fill out the online registration form
- Prepare your PSA birth certificate and one valid ID with your address and signature
- Submit the PhilHealth Member Registration Form (PMRF) along with your requirements
- Once processed, your PhilHealth Number (PIN) will be issued — this is a unique 12-digit identifier
- Give your PIN to your employer so they can start remitting your monthly contributions
- If you were previously enrolled but lost your number, you can request it online through the PhilHealth Member Portal
Pag-IBIG Fund MID Number
The Home Development Mutual Fund, more commonly known as Pag-IBIG, handles your housing needs and savings. Getting your number is straightforward:
- Go to the Pag-IBIG Fund website and click on the online membership registration
- Provide your personal details and contact information in the Member’s Data Form
- Upload a clear photo of your valid ID and your PSA birth certificate
- After successful registration, your Pag-IBIG MID (Membership ID) number will be sent to your email
- You can present this number to your employer for the monthly employer-employee contribution
- Pag-IBIG also offers a loyalty card plus physical ID for members who complete the biometrics process
Having all three numbers ready before your first day makes onboarding so much smoother. While you’re at it, make sure you also have your Omnibus Sworn Statement ready if you’re applying for a government position. Check our government job requirements checklist to see what else you might be missing.
Common Questions About SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG
- Can I use the same number if I change jobs? Yes, your SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG numbers stay with you for life. You just provide them to your new employer.
- What if I already have one but not the others? You can enroll in the remaining programs at any time. You don’t need to have all three before starting work — but the sooner the better.
- Are these numbers free? Yes, registration with SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG is free of charge. You only pay when you start making contributions.
- Do I need physical ID cards? Not necessarily. Your number is what matters most. You can print out a digital copy while waiting for your physical card.
