ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Zamboanga City Athletic Association once again proved its dominance in regional sports, bagging 148 gold medals, 96 silver, and 92 bronze at the Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Athletic Association (ZPRAA) Meet that concluded on Saturday in Isabela City, Basilan.
This marks the third consecutive year that Zamboanga City has ranked first overall in the ZPRAA meets, cementing its reputation as a powerhouse in Mindanao school sports. The city’s athletes outperformed delegations from across the region, including Zamboanga Del Norte-Dipolog City-Dapitan City Athletic Association (ZANDIDAA), which placed second with 125 gold medals, and Zamboanga del Sur Athletic Association (ZSAA), which finished third with 91 gold medals.
Rounding out the top six were Pagadian City with 24 golds, Zamboanga Sibugay with 24 golds, and host Isabela City with 22 golds. Sulu, participating in ZPRAA for the first time after transitioning from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), received a warm welcome for its athletes, taking home 2 gold medals, 6 silver, and 15 bronze.
The ZPRAA Meet serves as a qualifying event for the Palarong Pambansa, the country’s premier national sporting competition for student-athletes. Zamboanga City’s strong showing positions its young athletes well for potential national glory.
Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, during the Isabela Night event, acknowledged the support of local chief executives who traveled with their delegations. Sulu Governor Abdusakur ‘Toto’ Tan II and 11 of the province’s 19 town mayors attended to support their athletes and coaches.
The event featured competitions across multiple disciplines including basketball, volleyball, athletics, swimming, and other sports. Zamboanga City’s athletes displayed exceptional skill throughout the week-long competition. It was the first time Isabela City hosted the ZPRAA Meet.
