Barcelona’s most prestigious summer performing arts festival, the Grec Festival, returns for its landmark 50th edition from June 29 to August 31, 2026, featuring an ambitious programme of 99 shows across more than 50 venues throughout the city.
A Half-Century of Performing Arts
The 50th edition of the Grec Festival — known locally as Festival Grec de Barcelona — is a major milestone for an event that has shaped the cultural landscape of Catalonia since 1976. This year’s programme brings together world-class international names alongside emerging local talent, with performances spanning theatre, dance, music, and circus arts.
Headliners and Highlights
Returning artists include the acclaimed stage director Calixto Bieito, choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, avant-garde theatre maker Angélica Liddell, Brazilian director Christiane Jatahy, and choreographer Hofesh Shechter. New to the festival this year are Florentina Holzinger, Andrea Peña, Mucha Muchacha, and Sergi Casero Nieto.
The festival opens with Marta Pazos’ staging of L’òpera de tres rals by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill — a production that channels Brecht’s critical spirit into a dialogue with contemporary issues around inequality, opportunism, and survival.
A special 50th anniversary celebration takes place at the Teatre Grec on July 8, featuring a conversation with protagonists from the inaugural 1976 edition, screenings of four short films on the festival’s history, and a DJ set in the Jardins del Grec.
Venues Across Barcelona
The festival’s namesake venue, the open-air Teatre Grec on Montjuïc hill, remains the heart of the programme. But performances also take place at the Mercat de les Flors, Teatre Lliure, Barcelona’s museums, and other cultural spaces across all 10 districts of the city.
For festival-goers, this is a perfect opportunity to wear custom Barcelona-themed apparel. Whether attending open-air performances at Teatre Grec or exploring neighbourhood venues, a comfortable custom t-shirt makes for a great souvenir of the experience.
Ticket Information
Regular ticket sales began on April 24, 2026. Festival-goers can purchase passes for four or more shows and receive a discount of €8. Given the significance of this 50th edition, early booking is strongly recommended as many performances are expected to sell out quickly.
